Cambridge Audio was the first hi-fi company to abandon the ways of the tube for the technologies of solid-state, including the toriodal 'traffo'. This is unusual, as it is normal for the unbalanced inputs to offer 6dB lower gain. The Edge A has been connected to an IsoTek Evo 3 Sigmas mains conditioner and used with a pair of standmounts as well as stints with the MartinLogan Motion 20i and Neat Ministra. Cue the all-singing-all-dancing Edge hi-fi range. This time the first one broke. The new Edge range — including the Edge A integrated amplifier seen here — is perhaps its most ambitious line in a generation. And created our system with components that simply sounded the best.

In recognition of our heritage, we developed Edge. The balanced input impedance was 88k ohms at 20Hz and 1kHz, 83k ohms at 20kHz. Having spent time and money developing a marvellous high-end product, too often companies then package it with an ugly, cheap remote. Next came the challenge of clean-and-jerking the thing atop my rack—I know, all you young folks are sniggering, but one day you too will be old—which I somehow managed to accomplish without serious orthopedic trauma. More important than the circuit itself, are the numbers. Granted, I provided very good components upstream, to challenge the Edge A to dig deep.

There is also limited direct access for inputs so you have to cycle through them to get to where you want to be. Especially if that integrated amplifier is the new Edge A from Cambridge Audio, a British firm with a long record of seriousness about sound reproduction. The Edge A develops 100 watts into eight ohms but doubles this exactly to 200 watts into four. This is truly immersive stuff, as I bask in the intricacy and vibrancy of the close-miked piano. I ask because I'm demoing it right now. One really attractive facet is the presentation sounds all-of-a-piece; everything is well integrated with no sense of the bass dragging its feet. Johnson's wiry double bass was amply defined in space, but the actual weight of the soundstage—the physical presence of this musical thunderstorm—was even heavier than his instrument.

As a result, Edge delivers a more faithful reproduction of the original recording; an impressively detailed three-dimensional sound, with striking staging and focus. When you do turn it up, expect nothing but a dynamic and punchy sound that captures all the musicality of your songs. The headphone output impedance was a low 10. Listening With the Cambridge amp connected to my ancient but excellent near-full-range Energy Veritas 2. We developed the system by ear, testing every component and only choosing those that blew us away. It also has to be viewed alongside the other connectivity that the Edge A has.

Summing Up I've reviewed many integrated amplifiers for Stereophile. The preamplifier is easier to setup using the Edge Remote app to remotely do a firmware update and then rebooting the first time you plug it in; this takes around five minutes. Edge A is designed to bring musical detail to life. Setup I recently moved my turntable with Jelco 350S tonearm and Ortofon Quintet Bronze cartridge into my main rig, to drive the very refined tubed phono preamplifier. At the same time, Bowie uses keyboard bass in parts of this track and electric bass guitar in others, and the Edge combo is agile enough to show which is which. Cambridge Audio Edge A Integrated Amplifier Review I am glad that Christmas 2019 divided and extended my time with the Edge A because there was a point where I was about ready to type up a review that concluded that it was an interesting move upmarket but good rather than great.

In Edge we take this one step further, using opposing symmetry twin toroidal transformers. Instead the Edge Series features one high-quality dual concentric volume and source select control knob, enabling you to navigate menus and control the volume with a simple twist. The second is that the selection of inputs on the Edge A is different to any Cambridge Audio amp that has gone before. The output stage has no capacitors in it, choosing instead to make use of a Direct Coupled design that negates them being required. The first should be clearly visible from this section of the body of text. Seems like a bit of a trend is developing, slightly worrying on what are not cheap items. With 24-bit J-Test data, the resultant spectrum was superbly clean fig.
